Pleasure is Your Master: The Lies of a Hedonistic Culture

Introduction               This writing is something that I may have to somewhat apologize for but then again, I will not. There is this tendency in the current cultural climate that has taken rise that should be addressed. It is this idea that those who profess Christ and follow a Christian (or Judeo-Christian moral structure) are chastised for being “slaves.” In this discourse, I shall contend that it is not the moralistic tendencies of Christians (and Jews) who are truly slaves but those who profess to be genuinely free but are enslaved to their desires that are the problem. The Story             As the modern story goes, the Christian is nothing but a bigot who serves a benign God who only desires to control the subject. The problem that I presently see is that this seems contrary to the whole biblical corpus. Galatians 5:1 says that Christ has set us fre...

How Should I React?

As time trickles on and I interact more with people, I find myself asking this very question (How should I react?). This will not be a very long post, but I think it is essential to at least analyze different possibilities and potential outcomes. Think of this post as some light and easy reading before starting your day or while taking a break from work. The intent is not to articulate some proper prose form but rather write as a story, one that flows and nestles nicely with the content so....On we go! In no sense do I proclaim myself as an all-knowing individual. Actually, it is quite the contrary. I am merely living a life of inquiry and believe I have found undeniable...

The Burden of the Long Wait

Image
Introduction As it were, this will be the first post made here in several months. The title of this particular discourse is both descriptive of this fact and of the thought I have in mind currently. This idea of waiting is not something that is looked on nicely by polite society in our current age. With that said, this seems to be an aspect missing from our modern world, the ability to wait. What does it mean to wait? What good does it do me to wait? I'm not sure but what I do know is that there is value in waiting. (Picture retrieved from  https://fortheking2015.wordpress.com/2016/03/31/waiting-on-god/ ) The Will to Wait Waiting seems to be that thing no one has the will to do. So, having lost this overall positive disposition towards waiting, what has that done to the general psyche of the common man? Well, in short, it has nearly eliminated our ability to cope with drastically boring periods in life or those periods where nothing seems to be happening. For example, ...

Does Love Necessitate Acceptance?

Introduction             As I begin to write about this topic, I need to convey that the motivation for writing this came from a genuine question that I had. The beginning or spurring of asking this question, admittedly, came from viewing the context of an interaction between a person and their talking with someone who is homosexual. Now, I need to predicate all of this with, this is not some formal treatise against the homosexual person by any means but rather it was simply within this context that caused me to ask the question I hope to answer here. Not only from the context I witnessed in this single event but also from the general interaction between society and the church has caused me to ask this question, does love necessitate acceptance? Now, what do I mean when I say that I have been spurred on to ask this question based on what I have witnessed in the interaction between society and the church? I mean, typically t...

Determining Personhood: A Response to the New Abortion Laws

Introduction Amidst all the excitement and disgust at the newly passed abortion laws in New York state, it seemed like a rather pressing idea to find a way to make a point. I have seen a few articles that articulate well the idea that an unborn fetus is still a holder of the image of God (a point I quite agree with) and those comparing the current state of where our culture is moving to the Canaanites (another point I agree with). However, my goal was to tackle this issue without using God as my primary arguing point (although my argument does presuppose there is an immaterial aspect to the world).             There has been a highly contentious place within philosophy about personhood. Essentially, I will be presenting my criteria for determining personhood and that unborn babies fall under this qualification. The overall point is to show that this is not religiously bad, scientifically bad, but philosophically bad. I gues...

The World of Diversion, Dissonance, and Disdain

Today, I write with the full awareness and expectation that not many will take in these words but with a burning heart that aches at the anguish in the world I must write. There is a common thread that I can see that we have allowed to brew in our thinking for many years now and I will present them in a threefold manner. But first let me say that this is being written coming directly on the heels of the Florida school shooting, locally we have had school suicides, and yet another child has shot themselves this morning. This material of its own is confounding but what is more are the comments that follow events like these. The blatant disregard by those who furiously type as though their self-absorbed and cold opinions matter is utterly confusing. The lack of respect by those typing these comments is just puzzling on a grand scale because the comments are neither informative, helpful, further the cause, or add to the discussion. So what was the point of leaving the c...
